General Overview
This is a general description of the world of Abystine. It will include a brief history of the world and the general setting that players can expect to encounter.[ More General Overview...]
Abystine is not a typical world with sprawling continents and large locale’s. This is a decaying world that is long since shown the scars of various conflicts. But that does not mean that it still does not have beautiful landscapes and an infinite number of mysteries that characters can unravel.
The setting is largely Medieval with few modern comforts. There are stone houses heated by fires and primitive fuel, streets lit by candles, sprawling castles with giant moats, and travel is generally by carriage. However, there are subtle hints that this is not the way things used to be.
Large metal monstrosities litter the forests and remnants of some fantasy-based technology can easily be found in the baseboards of the city. It’s as though a lively modern city once dominated the world and the people here wiped it out in order to build this on top. People are aware of these technological marvels but few are known to pay them any mind. Some even find the rusty old junk incredibly charming!
World Map & Locations
This will list Locations of Note and the overall state of that place. These are small overviews and more substantial information will come at a later time.[ World Map Overview...]
Abystine is a large circular continent that sits on a lake of inky black water. This endless sea is called the “Obsydian Sea”. It’s said that inky black hands will rise from the depths to pull down any who wander too close to it. Better stay clear just in case.
The continent itself is divided into four sections: North, South, East, and West. Each section harbors a gate and each gate has a city that has been built on top of it. The gates are not common knowledge! You would be hard pressed to find anyone outside of the highest ranking individuals who have ever heard of them.
The following is a description of each land. Though this does not specify the individual cities within each area!
North: The Kingdom of Reyl

[ credit ]
Known as the Crown Jewel of Abystine, this Kingdom is the largest and most mysterious of the four lands. It’s known for its treacherous snowstorms and bone-chilling temperatures. At the same time it’s red ice formations and naturally occurring turquoise crystals are sure to dazzle first-time visitors.
It’s remote location allowed it to bear the brunt of attack from its hostile neighbors. That all came to an end recently as the Kingdom was overthrown by mysterious means. Players may explore the doomed land at their own leisure but it is uncertain what they will find. ( Click here for more info on this location. )
South: The Azure

[ credit ]
On the direct opposite end of Abystine is the Azure, home of sand dunes and refreshing desert lakes. It is hot all year around and flowers are always in bloom. The flowerfalls near it’s most prominent oasis gives the most pleasant smell, surely you’ll want to pay it a visit!
The people here have largely lost interest in conflict and would rather spend their days building or making technology of their very own. They also boast no large center of power or notable army which has made them less of a target to outsiders. ( Click here for more info on this location. )
East: The Skyline

[ credit ]
Carved into the sides of mountains and cliffs is the Skyline. This area harbors sleepy mountain villages, pristine lakes, and mist-covered cloudtops. It is of the most varied landscape in Abystine and can host everything from treacherous heightens to mysterious caves.
Because of how difficult it can be to infiltrate's its mountain cities, The Skyline was considered nigh impregnible for years. However, someone managed to infiltrate the capitol city and assassinate its leader some few decades past. It's leader has remained somewhat of a mystery regardless. No one ever stepped forward to clearly declare victory. So The Skyline remains as an ominous source of worry for the entire continent.
West: The Menagerie at World's End

[ credit ]
Otherwise known as simply "The Menagerie", this locale hosts dense forests and wetlands. The here are so massive that the canopy overhead can sometimes block out the sun. Many towns have carved (ha) out entire cities in the trunk of these massive trees. Bioluminescent plants are also rather commonplace and can occasionally be the only way to light the path ahead.
Those who live here can be distrustful to outsiders - with good reason. They have embroiled themselves in war with their bordering Kingdom to the North for generations over the matter of territory disputes. It is common knowledge that one should always bring a gift upon passing their borders.
The Core

The Underbelly

Technology
Abystine is a largely medieval land with few technological flourishes. Below is an explanation of some common technology you may encounter.[ More Technology Info...]
Technology and magic has mostly been lost to time. However, a few pieces are still commonly used today! This includes communication devices (network), Some lights, and some magically fused technology.
Communicators
These devices are a source of fascination for local tinkerers and come in all shapes and sizes! They are usually a mixture of metal pieces that have been stuck together and stay together by the grace of hope. Ones with better craftmanship would come at higher prices. These work well as an indication of status; Ones that are well-crafted give others impressions of wealth while the ones that are stuck together can give the impression of being poor or seedy.Communicators are not uncommon technology, but are looked on like something wholly unnecessary to common people. Why would you need to use some weird piece of metal when you could talk to a nice face?
If you manage/choose to obtain one of these devices, you can either use it to chat over a great distance or listen in on the locals gossip. All transmissions with these devices are public for now. Creating private channels are a goal that has been within reach for years, but no one has quite managed it.
Fast-Travel
Certain areas have hubs that serve as a way to fast-travel from place to place. These circular platforms have largely come into dis-use over the last many years. Some found them too cumbersome to keep running, others were purposefully destroyed to prevent attack, and others have been swallowed by nature. There are a couple Fast-Travel platforms that are still up and running. Be sure to look for them. They can prove immensely useful!
Magic
Magic is one of the many things that was sealed with the construction of the gates thousands of years ago. With the gate being broken in the North and Starseeds escaping, it is beginning to make its way into the world again. Having magic skills of any kind will set you apart from the rest in good ways and in not-so-good ways.[ More Magic Info...]
To that end, those who use magic in public places may be regarded with fascination or fear depending on the people and the atmosphere at the time. You'll want to be careful using your magic for others to see given it could have consequences on how you are perceived or treated.
You will be able to find people who are welcoming and delighted by magic and you will find others who are hostile towards it. You can also impact people's impressions by how you use it to help/hinder them. Tread carefully!
Inhabitants
All sorts of people and creatures inhabit the world of Abystine. Below is a summary of more information.[ More Inhabitant Info...]
All manner of races inhabit Abystine; From Elves, Birdfolk, Mer-kin, Nymphs, Dragons, Humans, to other creatures of undefined names and origins. Least to say that there are an eclectic bunch of folks that inhabit the world! If you should so happen to have a character that does not fit the mold of human, it will not be an issue.
However, certain people are more likely to linger in specific places. For example, the birdfolk are more at home in the high cliffs of the Skyline. The Mer-kin might feel better in the dark waters of the Menagerie.
